Vandervort Neighborhood Park
(formerly Fisher-Mill Plain)

Current Status
Construction began in April 2010. The park is closed during construction to protect public safety. Work is scheduled to be complete and the park reopened to the public this fall.

Why is this park being developed?
This property was originally acquired by Clark County with the intention of developing it as a neighborhood park once funding was available to maintain it. In 2005, voters in the unincorporated urban area of the county approved a ballot measure that created the Greater Clark Parks District. This special taxing district provides maintenance and operations funding for 30 new neighborhood parks, five new community parks, seven miles of new trail and additional youth sports fields. Vandervort Neighborhood Park was one of the 30 neighborhood park properties that were identified as being part of the Greater Clark Parks District during the campaign. It is now being developed as part of this program.

Construction Information

July 2010 Update: The contractor has completed paving all interior trails and active use areas, and is almost done installing the picnic tables, playground equipment and basketball hoop. The irrigation system is being installed. The walkway along NE 172nd Avenue is being developed and the curb and gutter have been installed along the roadway. Logs have been placed near several rain garden stormwater facilities throughout the park.

Project Description
This 8-acre park is located on NE 172nd Avenue between NE 3rd and NE 5th Streets in the Fisher-Mill Plain neighborhood. The park property currently features a number of mature evergreen trees and open grassy areas.

Typical neighborhood parks are 3-5 acres in size. The county does not have enough funding available to develop and maintain all eight acres of this park. As a result, staff has developed a concept plan for a five-acre section of this park. The remaining three acres will remain undeveloped, but open to the public.

Public Participation
Project staff rely on public participation to help guide park layout during the design process. Your input will:

  • Help us understand and respond to the needs and concerns of your neighborhood.
  • Help us understand which park features are most important to you and your neighbors.
  • Help us learn about the potential for community fundraising to add features to the park.

The first project mailer and comment form was sent out to park neighbors in late March 2007, and posted on this Web page.

Several different preliminary concept plans were later developed based on public input, the project budget and the topography of the park. These plans were presented to neighbors at a public meeting on October 16, 2008, and posted on this Web page for review and input.

In early January 2009, the updated proposed concept plan was mailed out to neighbors in a newsletter for final review and comments before being approved by the Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission on January 16, 2009.

In May 2009, a postcard was mailed to neighbors inviting them to fill out an online comment form about the playground equipment that may be selected for this park. Paper copies were also available for people without access to the Internet.

In March 2010, neighbors received a letter announcing the start of construction.

Project Funding
Design and construction of Vandervort Neighborhood Park is funded by park impact fees, which are paid whenever a new residential property is developed, and the real estate excise tax, which is paid whenever property is sold. Maintenance of the park will be funded by the Greater Clark Parks District, a special district approved by voters in the unincorporated urban area of Clark County in 2005.
